Greene County treasurer Katlyn Michaelsen responded to a GreeneCountyNewsOnline account of a conversation at the county board of supervisors’ Aug. 3 meeting about the hiring of an office employee. “At no point during the application or interview process were applicants asked questions about their age, health, or family status,” Mechaelsen said.
“I myself am a new mother, and I would never take into consideration a job applicant’s desire to have more children when deciding whether to offer that person employment,” she said. “It is unfortunate that a board member’s inquiries about a family friend after after I had already offered her a position in my office are being presented in a way that calls into question the integrity of the hiring process. Jessica was hired because she was the best person for the job, and no one but the media is suggesting otherwise.”
Mechaelsen was unclear whether the new office clerk, Jessica Larson, is her family friend or a family friend of a county supervisor.
[Editor’s note: The previous post does not infer Larson is not qualified for the position. It reports a conversation held in a public meeting.]
